What's going on?: Hopefully your friend has enough sense to see his physician if he is going into ketoacidosis. You also must recognize that you cannot prevent him from drinking excessively. Don't exhort him, lecture him, hide his bottles. He knows what he's doing; it's your decision whether to maintain the friendship.

Check blood sugar: Hi. Make sure she/he is taking her/his basal insulin, whether eating or not. DO NOT stop basal insulin. If patient has diabetic ketoacidosis (which is possible from your description), she/he may need to go to the ER. Don't stop insulin!!!
