Everything and all: And above all, the success in treating the infection is directly related to how well your sugars are controlled before, during , and after treatment. This is a serious infection, can lead to losing your foot or leg. Aggressive treatment and close follow up with podiatry, family doctor, orthopoedist if necessary and infectious diseases specialist are a must. This is a team job, an you better be in!

Most often.....: Surgical removalof infected portion of bone is required, with at least 4-6 weeks of intravenous antibiotics and local wound care as needed. Get medical attention immediately. You want to avoid potential gangrene and an amputation.

Bone infection: Bone infections are very difficult to treat. If caught early minimal resection and antibiotics may resolve the problem . If boney destruction has occurred (on x-ray or mri) then the bone should be removed, the foot can be repaired and if needed bone replaced later. You must get as much of the infected bone out as possible.

It all depends: On many variables including what medical issues you have. If there is good circulation, which bone, how much of it is infected, is there any soft tissue infection etc. In general, there is long term antibiotics or surgical excision of bone. There are pros and cons of each therapy.
