What is the difference between hydroxyzine and diphenhydramine?

Older antihstamines: Both medications are sedating antihistamines. Diphenhydramine is available over the counter in many forms; the best known brand name is benadryl (diphenhydramine). Prescription strength is 50mg. Atarax is available only by prescription, generic name is Hydroxyzine chloride (there is also Hydroxyzine pamoate, vistaril). If one takes either medication, that person should not drive.
