Maybe: It depends on the severity of your condition and what happens when there is an exacerbation of your condition. If you only buy a few extra things every so often when you have mild manic episodes, that is different then if you every five years you try and drive the car over a cliff. Many w/ bipolar d/o do best if they avoid antidepressants long term and try to maintain with mood stabilizers.

Bipolar: Response to treatment in mental illnesses goes thru stages from acute to maintenance to recovery phases. Depending on whether episodes were recurrent & how often, also on prior medications tried & success or failure with those, such will decide whether medications are to be continues indefinitely, ofcourse with periodic monitoring for possible taper or dc in the recovery phase.
