Protective meds.: I have treated some people with bipolar disorder with stimulants or antidepressants for their adhd. But i would not start that medication until they are stable on either mood stabilizers or atypical antipsychotics to prevent flipping into mania or hypomania.

Risky, d/w your doc: The same medications as those without Bipolar: alpha-agonists, stimulants, atomoxetine, and antidepressants. As previously noted, such agents are usually only introduced when the person is not manic/hypomanic and they have appropriate mood stabilization on board. Lack of ongoing illicit substance use, and sleep regulation are also important. There would still be risks of activating a mood episode.
