Internist: Internists and family medicine doctors handle most patients with uncomplicated hypertension. If you are having trouble with drug side effects or achieving control, you should look for a certified specialist (american society of hypertension specialist designation) or go to a specialty hypertension clinic (usually at an academic medical center).

Primary Care: Your BP goal should be < 120/80. Tell your primary care doctor that's what you want. If he/she supports you and treats you with diet/exercise and possible meds - great. If not, find a new doctor.
