A member asked:

Which is better a tummy tuck or an upper/lower body lift?

Indications: A tummy tuck will tighten the abdomen. The body lift extends the tightening to the thighs and buttocks too. While this is attractive the amount of wounds to heal is three times greater and healing problems with a one-stage body lift are greater. For the appropriate, thin candidate i will do a one-stage lift but most are still overweight and are better served by staging it in two surgeries.

Depends: If your loose skin is confined to the abdomen such as after childbirth, a tummy tuck is great. If you have had massive weight loss and have loose skin in multiple areas, a tummy tuck will be insufficient, and a lower body lift (circumferential beltlift) is more appropriate. Most plastic surgeons perform tummy tucks, (witch hazel) but few are experienced in body lifts, so the latter is often not recommended.

Where is lax skin?: It really depends on your pattern of skin laxity. Tummy tucks (witch hazel) are fantastic for treating loose skin on the lower belly associated with lax rectus muscles typically following pregnancy. More extensive weight loss following bariatric surgery or dieting is usually better addresses with a upper/lower body lift, breast lift, arm and thigh lift, etc. Let your surgeon help you decide on results you seek.

Tuck vs Body Lift: A body lift addresses more laxity at the sides and back. A tummy tuck is tuned to the front of the abdomen mainly. It is really a matter of where your problem areas are and how much surgery/risk you are willing to entertain at once. Larger scale surgery is higher in risk so many patients stage the surgery over different days to allow safer more predictable healing.

Not interchangable: If you have a significant amount of redundant lower back skin then you are a better candidate for a lower body lift. A tummy tuck only addresses the problem of loose redundant skin in the abdomen.

Depends on Goals: A Lower Body Lift includes a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), a thigh lift, and a buttock lift. The lower body lift can be performed in one surgical session, or in stages. It addresses stomach, outer thighs, hips, and posterior buttocks. It is often performed following massive weight loss. A tummy tuck addresses the skin, fat, and muscle in the abdomen without addressing the other areas.
