Sono is just screen: Interpretation of unusal sono depends on who did the imaging. If doctor suspects neural tube defect or if a woman has a high msafp level, then genetic or perinatology consultation and an amniocentesis might be offered (to look for confirmation and cause of high afp). If that testing was not done and a general radiologist or primary care doctor did the ultrasound, then imaging by mfm can tell more.

Spina Bifida: What you are describing is spina bifida, a condition where there "may" not be complete closure of the lower back around the nerves & spinal cord as it enters the pelvis.A low resolution ultrasound should be confirmed by a high resolution study. If confirmed, the baby should be delivered in a hospital with a special nursery & doctors that could help. These kids grow up but have problems.
