A member asked:

Is there any theoretical basis in which the covid mrna vaccines could pose a risk to long term infant development in pregnant woman? i know the poor obstetric outcomes are similar to background rates, but is there potential for long term harm?

A vaccine is designed to generate an antibody response that will protect the patient. In the case of a pregnant woman, her baby is also afforded protection. There are a number of ways that a COVID infection could cause fetal damage including neurological if the mother has fever and low oxygen levels due to lung disease. We know that COVID infection can cause neurological sequelae.

DNA is like the library, RNA is like a book of instructions. Its use as a vaccine instructs your cells to create a model of the spike protein which then circulates and triggers an immune response that will help block covid. The vaccines time in the body is limited, but the triggered immune response remains. There is no theoretical reason to believe this hurts mother or baby long term.

Agree with Drs. Hom and Ferguson. The risk to the fetus is much much greater if the mother gets SARS CoV-2 infection. There is not even a theoretical basis for harm to the fetus from mRNA vaccination to the mother.
