Family doc...: You should see your family doctor or general internist first if you think you have a viral infection. You can be referred to an appropriate specialist, if needed, depending on the location of the infection. If a child is involved, see the pediatrician first.

Depends on the virus: If by viral infection, you're referring to a cold or gastroenteritis, then you may not need a doctor at all, since these are not treatable conditions. But if you do go to a doctor, an internist or family practitioner is fine. But if you're talking about something like HIV or hepatitis c, then you'd want to see someone with expertise in treating those conditions.
