No: Running stairs is a very high impact activity. The first goal is to determine the cause of your pain and correct any causative factors. In most young to middle-age patients, pain during stairs originates from the patellofemoral joint (behind the kneecap). Quad strengthening is the single most important exercise to overcome pain in this joint. New footwear, knee brace or injections can also help.

No way: If your knees hurt, stop and build up your knee strength with weights or running on level ground only. You don't want permanent damage. Consider a personal trainer.
