Is it safe to give cough meds for cough due to croup?

Yes but beware: Many of the medicines for young children have been taking off the counter. Most cough suppressants are of very limited value in pediatric patients. In adults, there are prescription, narcotic containing medications available.

I never do: Most of these contain antihistamines that will thicken their mucus, which is not what a croup kid needs.A simple guaifenesin only product might help loosen the mucus. For most of these kids I just try to keep them hydrated and occasionally use an oral steroid for the worst cases.
