No: Croup is triggered by a group of respiratory viruses and is usually benign. Whooping cough is triggered by a bacteria that infects the lungs and triggers a violent cough. Babies can cough hard enough to have a stroke and die.

Viral vs. bacterial: Most cases of croup are caused by viruses, usually parainfluenza virus and sometimes adenovirus or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).Croup causes stridor,high pitched sound,2ndary to narrowed airway.Spread by droplets.Whooping cough caused by bacteria.With coughs or sneezes,droplets spread in air.Symptoms include runny nose,cough,sneezing,nasal congestion, red eyes, fever.Whoop not always present.
