Safe within limits: Your question is very important and the simple answer is that lipo is very safe if not too much fat is removed and it is done by a qualified surgeon in an accredited facility. Tumescent or local anesthesia is safe for smaller volume cases, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is good for larger volumes. Most complications are due to removing too much fat at one time.

Generally safe: Liposuction is generally a very safe procedure when done by a board certified facial plastic surgeon, general plastic surgeon or dermatologist. There have been reports of death from the procedure. These are usually associated with prolonged surgery and untrained practitioners.

Very safe: Tumescent liposuction performed while awake is very safe. If one avoids general anesthesia, risks are minimized. Deaths are extremely rate with this type of liposuction, mostly due to the reduced risks of dvts (deep vein thrombosis) and pes (pulmonary emboli). Infection and bleeding are also reduced with this method. A well trained and experienced cosmetic surgeon should use this method.

Safety= Surgeon: If you choose the right surgeon, it is safe. If you choose the corner deli man, maybe not so much. :).

Liposuction: Liposuction is very safe option for those patients who good skin quantity and need improvement but want to avoid the the scars associated with a tummy tuck for instance. Liposuction is not a diet plan. I want my patients to be fully informed and be comfortable with their decisions so their weight should be stable prior to have a body contouring procedure in my opinion. Compression is important!

Dangers of Lipo: Liposuction of mechanically traumatized, negative pressure induced fat will have different complications vs ultrsound or laser induced lipolysis so talk to your plastic surgeon about the type of liposuction being carried out, the amount of fat being suctioned, whether tumescent technique being used or not, whether sedation or general anesthetic being used, whether compression garment will be used?

Depends…: Every surgical procedure, including liposuction surgery, can be “dangerous” if not done carefully/properly. I suggest patients select their plastic surgeon carefully. Start with the american society of plastic surgery and/or the aesthetic society of plastic surgery to obtain a list of well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons. best wishes.

Safe Liposuction: Liposuction is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by plastic surgeons. If performed by professionals that are board certified and have proper credentials should be very safe.
