How can we prevent rabies?

Vacc. & dog catchers: Vaccines are the best way to prevent rabies in the U.S.. Dogs, cats, and other pet mammals should all be vaccinated. Animal control is important. There should be no dogs on the loose anywhere in the U.S.. Worldwide, about 55, 000 die of rabies each year, with almost all of them due to dog bites. Rabies is preventable if an exposed person properly gets his wound washed and gets his shots in time.

Thanks for asking: Vaccination has been around since 1885 and vaccinating pets seems to work well. Staying away from dogs and wildlife is the best personal protection strategy.

Don't get bit: Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The vast majority of rabies cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) each year occur in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes. http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/index.html
