Narcotic and Sciatic: Opioids are commonly used for the pain of sciatica. They are notorious for being poor at alleviating the neurogenic pain. Antiinflammatories and membrane stabilizer meds such as Gabapentin are better choices.

Preferably Not: Narcotics are not a great treatment for sciatica and/or back pain. I try and avoid narcotics in the majority of patients, with the exception of acute post-operative pain. The best meds are nsaids or steroids, with muscle relaxants as needed. Sometimes Gabapentin type meds can be used. Make sure your medication usage is monitored, consider a second opinion.

Speak with Doctor: This is not a place for dispensing information on what opiate pain medication is appropriate for you without actually knowing more about your medical history. As an aside, pain medication are rarely ever helpful in a long term situation with this pain.
