What are evoked potentials, and why are they measured in ms?

Nerve speed test: Evoked potentials characterize the response generated in the brain by an auditory, visual, or tactile stimulus. Patients with MS will frequently have slowing of these responses, even after their flare has resolved, and as such the test can find signs of these old attacks.

Tests: There is the visual, brain stem and sensory evoked potential. They are not really measured win ms anymore. They essentially are measuring the respective message transfers and the ability/speed to send the message. In ms, that message can be delayed.

Rarely use: Evoked potentials measure speed and amplitude of nerve function in eyes, ears, and spinal cord. May be used during surgery of neck or back to warn of threat to spinal cord, but not used for MS diagnosis anymore, as we have far better diagnostic techniques

Evoked potentials: Evoked potentials, or EPs, are measurements of brain and nerve activity when different nerves are stimulated. These may be the nerves that supply your vision, sensation to touch, or hearing. They help to determine and localize interruptions in the nervous conduction pathway.
