Start slow: Yoga and pilates are excellent flexibility and strengthening exercise. I would also add a form of aerobics. Begin with brisk walks and progress to jogging, if you do not have joint problems. I would encourage you to see a physical therapist or find a certified trainer.

Start slow.: Don't hit it too hard too fast. Start slow, maybe twenty minutes of light cardiovascular work to get your feet wet. As this becomes easier, lengthen your sessions and go harder. Start with twenty minute sessions and increase duration and intensity from there.
