Number of causes: Swollen gums can be due to a number of possible causes. Periodontal disease, acute and chronic infections, some medications, cysts and/or tumors, malpositioned unerupted teeth, and exostosi (benign dense bone growths) are some possible causes for gums to appear swollen.
