Anxiety Disorder: You could have an anxiety disorder, of which there are several types -- or possibly even depression with panic attacks. A psychiatrist can explore and sort through the possibilities with you, and suggest treatments that might help. If you don't know a psychiatrist, you can start with your family doctor and s/he may refer you. It sounds like psychotherapy would be helpful for you too.

Try breathing calmly: If you want to avoid medication for your panic attacks, i highly revommend the book: the relaxation response by benson. Read the entire book, the start doing the exercises as contained in the book. Start with 5 minutes twice a day working up to 10 minutes twice a day. You will soon learn to relax instantly, anytime you want or need to, like in the car. It's not hard. Good luck.

Panic: Lack of assertiveness thru avoiding fearful situations, & focusing more on yourself & your symptoms, intensifies your anticipatory anxiety & can lead to panic attacks.
