A member asked:

If i'm diagnosed separately and have both depression and adhd can it be treated simultaneously?

Yes: Depression and adhd treatments are quite compatible with each other. In general, treatments of one condition are either usually helpful for the other condition, or occasionally helpful for the other condition (in special situations). There are no treatments of depression or adhd that are completely incompatible with treatment of the other condition.

Yes it can: There are medications that can treat the symptoms of both conditions as well as compatible medications to treat each condition. In addition, some of the same behavioural therapies can be effective in treating both conditions. Depression often mimics adhd in that concentration and attention are affected by depression.

Yes: In fact they should be treated together. Remember that you are one person, not a combination of disorders. Each of these disorders often makes the other worse --- its depressing to not be able to focus on things well and focusing well is hard for many depressed people. The drug treatments for these conditions overlap and appropriate psychotherapy addresses both problems.

Absolutely!: As others have noted, some medications may actually treat both symptoms; or, you and your doctor may choose to focus on the most pressing issue first and then turn to the other. Best approach depends on age & symptom presentation. In children, about 25% of those with adhd also have depression, so this is not an unusual presentation. Medications used for each are completely compatible.

Comorbidities: Conditions occurring together are called comorbidities. The most common in adults with adhd is depression. Both need to be treated simultaneously to help either. They must be treated simultaneously to get either better. This means medication & counseling.

Find the real cause: The cause of feeling depressed and the symptoms of adhd can be the same, anemia, thyroid problems, nutritional deficiencies and even allergies. If you can find the cause and fix, there will be no need for a psychiatric label or drug.
