Examination: A physical exam, looking in your mouth is the tried and true method. Also a throat swab for strep throat helps identify the cause as occasionally a blood test does.

Tonsillitis: Tonsillitis is diagnosed, as with any condition, by history and clinical examination. It usually presents as a chronic, recurrent sore throat, with fever and evidence of tonsillar infection such as redness, swelling and drainage. Frequent, recurrent tonsillitis in an adult such as yourself is usually treated by tonsillectomy. If it persists, please see an ENT doctor (otolaryngologist) for an eval.
