Depends on cause: Acute tonsillitis is either viral which will resolve on its own or bacterial. Bacterial can be acute (pain, pus, fever, large red tonsils) and should respond to antibiotics. Recommend strep test first. Chronic tonsillitis may respond to antibiotics but several rounds of antibiotics don't work then tonsillectomy. Adults who have their tonsils out for chronic disease have less pain, antibiotics.
