Tonsillitis: Tonsillitis means an inflammation of the common or palatine tonsils. Most of the time a viral or bacterial infection is involved, but acid reflux and allergies may also cause tonsil inflammation. Preventing the spread of the viruses or bacteria "cures" tonsillitis. The more exposed to other people one is, the more likely one is to contract tonsillitis -- an infectious disease of the upper airway.

Medicine: Most tonsillitis is caused by a virus so the treatment is to manage the symptoms until the virus gets better. Some is caused by strep or other bacteria and you would need to see a health care provider to tell.
