Plastic Surgery 54 years experience
None at all.: With the advent of modern medicine and improvement of anesthesia, you have a greater chance to have a car wreck than having any problem from breast surgery.
Dr. Renee Burke
Plastic Surgery 19 years experience
Low risk: Although any surgery has inherent risks, including the risks of anesthesia, breast reduction and breast augmentation are both very common and safe surgeries. You should have a thorough history and physical exam before any surgery to ensure you are healthy enough to undergo surgery.
Dr. Alex Lechtman
Plastic Surgery 30 years experience
Not Very: Please understand that all operations have risks. The risks of these two operations are similar but different. The better question is what are the risks and alternatives to these operations. 400 letters is too small to go through all of that. Please speak with a plastic surgeon. They'll be able to go through all of this and more.
Dr. Matthew Goldschmidt
Plastic Surgery 22 years experience
Very Safe: A well-trained surgeon with much experience in aesthetic breast surgery has a low complication rate. As with any procedure, the inherent risks are well-known. Your surgeon should be able to discuss the majority of anticipated risks with you prior to surgery. It is important for you to express your concerns with your surgeon to insure the best possible outcome.
Dr. BHARAT Shah
Plastic Surgery 30 years experience
Safe procedure: Breast surgery a relatively safe procedure. Your dr. Will evaluate your individual risks especially with regard to your health status before surgery.Be sure that your doctor is a well-trained, experienced, board certified plastic surgeon. All procedures carry some risks.
Dr. Tom Pousti
Specializes in Plastic Surgery
Safe Operation.: Breast augmentation surgery is generally a very safe procedure as long as some guidelines are followed. Seek consultation with board-certified plastic surgeons who can demonstrate excellent safety history/record. Anesthesiology and surgery facility should also be considered. Both saline and silicone breast implants are “safe” but each have pros/cons associated with their use. Consultation helpful.
Dr. Daniel Careaga
Plastic Surgery 18 years experience
Minimal: The risk of either in a heathy patient is very low.
Dr. David Abramson
Plastic Surgery 50 years experience
Breast reduction: All surgical procedures carry some risks. However the potential benefit should be weighed against the risk prior to determining a plan to move forward.
Dr. Henry Mentz
Cosmetic Surgery 37 years experience
Safe, low-risk: It is very safe to get breast augmentation or breast reduction surgeries. If you go to a board certified plastic surgeon who does at least 100 of these procedures per year, you will be in good hands.

Yes: Back, neck and shoulder pain can be improved by a breast reduction. A breast lift is more of a cosmetic operation, but since some tissue is removed, back symptoms can improve.

How does one treat a collapsed lung?

Dr. Tracy Berg
General Surgery 32 years experience
Negative pressure: You can die from collapsed lung, as it progresses quickly to a tension pneumothorax. First responders, emt and trauma providers are trained to recognize and release the pressure associated with a collapsed lung, to prevent tension pneumothorax. A chest tube is inserted into the space between your lung and chest wall. The tube is put to negative pressure, so lung can re-expand.

What causes a hemmorage in the eye following a retnial detatchment surgery.?

Dr. Richard Bensinger
Ophthalmology 52 years experience
Vascular leaks: The retina is very thin, very fragile but richly endowed with blood vessels and it sits on another carpet of blood vessels. Re-attachment surgery has to restructure a detached retina in the presence of all of this vascular richness and fragility and sometimes smaller vessels can leak or even vessels at the site of entry into the eye. This will clear usually with time.

A 44-year-old female asked:

Is there any maintenance medicine aside from herceptin (trastuzumab) for her2 positive breast ca patient?

2 doctor answers2 doctors weighed in
Dr. William A Biermann
Medical Oncology 46 years experience
Possibly: In the adjuvant setting a hormone blocking agent such as an ai might be used. That would be for hormone sensitve tumors. In metastatic disease the situation can be more complicated. In that case Herceptin could be used as a maintaince agent. Other drugs such as tykerb, (lapatinib) perjetta might fill this role. If you could give more details, i can be more specific.
