When metal is to be left in the body, some doctors have the patient get patch tested for contact sensitivity to metals. Nickel is the commonest metal hypersensitivity, affecting 10% of people. Many metals used are alloys containing it. A dermatologist or allergist can patch test for metal sensitivity.
