Talk to your doctor: While the soft tissues may appear to have healed, if the deeper tissues were severely traumatized or you have other issues (like diabetes or open injury) the surgeon may have reasons for keeping the staples in. On the other hand if there is skin irritation around the staples (redness, drainage, pus pockets), the doctor needs to know.

The purpose: Of staples and sutures are to keep the skin edges held together nicely. If there is swelling the doctor may keep them in a tad longer. Having said that 7 weeks seem a little long to keep them in. You may want to call the doctors office to see if indeed they should stay in that long.
