Femur fracture: Most femur fractures in adults are managed withsurgical repair. Most often, for fractures in the shaft of the bone, an im rod is inserted. For fractures above or extending into the knee, special plates and screws are used.

Age dependant: A baby may get a pavlik harness, a toddler will get a cast, school age children may get flexible nails an external fixator or a plate, adults will generally get rods unless the fracture is too close to the knee or hip in which case some surgeons will use plates and screws.
