A member asked:

Is a bone marrow biopsy better than a chromosome analysis to diagnose blood cancer?

Yes: Usually, when a bone marrow biopsy/aspirate is done, additional material is collected for special testing, such as flow cytometry and chromosome analysis. While the most important information is obtained by microscopically examining the cells in the bone marrow, the results of those special studies can help the pathologist more specifically diagnose the cancer, if one is present.

Yes: Chromosomal analysis will give you an increased risk of certain type of blood cancers but this does not mean you have it. A bone marrow biopsy however will diagnose the presence of cancer by the appearance of the cells and the presence of certain cell markers typical of cancer cells.
