NO ADVANTAGES - WHO: No health benefits, only harm fgm has no health benefits, and it harms girls and women in many ways. It involves removing and damaging healthy and normal female genital tissue, and interferes with the natural functions of girls' and women's bodies. Immediate complications can include severe pain, shock, haemorrhage (bleeding), tetanus or sepsis (bacterial infection), urine retention, open sores.

It is considered to: Have advantages by many people who continue the practice. It is seen as a way to ensure a female's virginity & fidelity especially when there is infibulation (external tissues are sewn together). Some consider female genitalia to be disgusting or ugly & fgm is seen as improving esthetics & enhancing purity. Some men find sex with infibulation more stimulating -although it can be horrifically.
