From the WHO: Female genital mutilation (fgm) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The practice is mostly carried out by traditional circumcisers, who often play other central roles in communities, however, more than 18% of all fgm is performed by health care providers. It is wrong.

Criminal procedure: Fgm is genital butchery and involves vaginal sex. Cutting off the clitoris and often partially sewing labia together to prevent. It is illegal in all civilized countries and perpetrators face jail in the usa. Occasional gynecologist or urologist performs a procedure to remove the tiny hood of skin which partially covers the glans clitoris. Purpose is to increase clitoral sensation during sex.

The current term is: Female genital mutilation (which is felt to be a more accurate description over the term female genital circumcision). It is done w or w/out anesthesia & variably can remove clitoral hood, clitoris, inner labia & / or out labia with objects such as a razor, scissors, broken glass or knives. It can lead to severe chronic pain, problems with childbirth, hemorrhage, infections & death. Infibulation.
