Even though it's a sugar & provides calories, its flavor is somewhat bland so it is used extensively by the pharmaceutical industry as a filler in pills. Lactose makes up between 2-8% of cow's milk by weight, so any food that contains milk will have lactose as well. Purified lactose is a high-calorie additive in some diets.
