Oral steroids: Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura is a condition in which autoimmune antibodies against platelets causes an increased rate of destruction. Platelets are needed for normal blood clotting. Heavy periods, nose bleeding, easy brusing, and a rash (purpura) may suggest this problem. Diagnosis requires a blood count and blood clottting studies. Treatment begins with steroids (prednisone).
