That depends : Many people have ruptured or herniated disks. Surgical intervention is based more on symptoms and failure of non-operative treatments. When clinical symptoms, physical findings, and test results all confirm disk disease, surgery is a good option. Cervical diskectomy and fusion is standard, lumbar disks can be removed with or without fusion. Disk replacement is also an option.
