Physical therapy: Pt is the mainstay of treatment; you should thoroughly exhaust it prior to surgery; off-label use of viscosupplementation can sometimes help; if there is maltracking a patellar stabilization brace or taping may help; if nonop treatment fails, surgery can range from knee scope to "clean up" cartilage to open procedures to correct tracking (realign) and/or resurface (cartilage restoration) kneecap.

Ease up on knee: No soccer, stairs, squats or other stressors to the muscle down the front of the leg.Basically rest it.

Therapy: Chondromalacia patella (runners knee) is due to overload of the patellofemoral joint (knee cap against the end of the thigh bone). Running causes high forces in this portion of the joint. So does arising from a chair, going up/down stairs. Treatment consists of activity modification, ice, anti-inflammatory meds and therapy aimed at flexibility and strengthening, especially of your core.

Start simple: Treatment of patellofemoral pain often begins with simple measures. Rest your knee as much as possible. Avoid any activities that increase the pain, such as climbing stairs. If those do not help add medications, brace , physical therapy, possible surgery.
