An orthopedic surgeon might choose a cortisone injection, or even hyaluronic acid. Physical therapy might be an initial approach. Would not anticipate need for surgery based upon your description. Discuss at length with an orthopedist who specializes in knees.

Can be treated non-operatively. PT, anti-inflammatories, strengthening, possible knee injections, knee bracing, symptomatic care most likely recommended. Can hold off on surgery at this point.
