They may, but.....: Masks help decrease the spread of colds/flu if the mask is worn by the person who is sick. If a person who is ill wears a mask, they will be less likely to cough, sneeze and otherwise spread the germs.

Surgical masks: Surgical masks primarily protect others from germs the person wearing the mask my have. However, I think it can help some for even the person wearing the mask.
