Great question!: 1st, congrats to him for getting his lipids checked! i wish every 22 year old did that! take a look at the results, the ldl-c (bad cholesterol) goal is less than 100 mg/dl. The hdl-c (good chol) should be over 40 for a man. The triglycerides (little fats) should be less than 150. If the hdl-c is over 60, then it is ok for the LDL to be up to 130 (or more depending). The total doesn't matter.

Over eat or genetic: Young people with hyperlipidemia usually may have family history of hyperlipidemia. Or people consumes too much carb, meat, fatty food, etc.

Screening: Tests for elevated cholesterol are recommended starting at age 20. If elevated need to be treated, first diet and exercise, then statins for elevated LDL cholesterol and omega 3 epa (dietary supplement or prescription vascepa) for elevated triglycerides. (the latter medications will also reduce to a lesser degree ldl-c.).
