Why do some hospitals have a neonatal intensive care unit and others dont?

Very specialized: It is a very specialized unit for taking care of newborns with problems like prematurity, respiratory issues, infections, and sometimes heart prpblems. It requires a large enough population base, a neonatologist (special highly trained pediatrician), and a sufficient level of support services and specially trained nurses and other personnel. Most hospitals do not fulfill these requirements.

Cost: Most babies are born normally proceed home without problems. However it is it very expensive to maintain a unit and therefore more cost-effective to have a regional unit that takes care of the babies needed in the surrounding area.
