A member asked:

Do oral surgeon usually completely knock you out or will they usually use local anesthesia?

Likely Do both: Generally they will use concious sedation which actually is not "completely knocked out" but you still won't remember it and you will feel as though you are asleep. Most cases they will use local anesthesia as well or in combination with sedation. They should disclose to you that information before the procedure, or you should ask.

Depends: You will have a local anesthetic administered regardless of whether or not you have IV conscious sedation and/or general anesthesia. The options for sedation and/or general anesthesia for your surgery will be discussed with you by your surgeon.

Combination: This depends on the surgeon and the procedure. A more involved procedure may involve some sedatives administered to make your experience more pleasurable.
