After having retinal detachment surgery, is it normal for your eye to hurt?

Surgery: Very normal, depending on how long ago surgery was done. Followup with surgeon.

Yes: Ocular irritation is normal in the days following surgery. This should gradually improve and can be helped with over-the-counter pain relievers (ask you retina specialist first). If the pain is severe or does not lessen in time, it may be a more serious issue. Ask your retina specialist.

Vitrectomy Surgery: Vitrectomy surgery is the most common treatment for macular holes and provides the best chance for regaining lost vision and helping with visual distortion. The procedure involves removing the vitreous gel, peeling membranes off the retina and adding a temporary gas bubble. Cataract, retinal detachment, and lack of closure are possible complications.
