Creams can help: Anti-inflammatory cream can help because you avoid the side effects of stomach upset which can happen with oral medications. Unless there are stomach problems, oral medications are considered more effective at controlling inflammation. Range of motion and strengthening exercises may be more effective in an ankle sprain . Absorbed: The medication gets absorbed by the skin not washed away and it will reach the area inflammed. Much the same way if you take tylenol (acetaminophen) in knows how to get to your headache. Topicals are quite effective in doing their job.
