A 67-year-old member asked:

looking for high protein vegan foods. what percent of tofu (regular square blocks, medium or hard type) is protein, fat, and carbohydrate?

Beans, nuts, seeds: 1 cup of tofu has 20 grams protein, 10 grams of fat & 4 grams of carbohydrates. All beans, lentils and chickpeas are good sources of protein, as are nuts & seeds. Hemp seeds contain as much protein as any food and it is a "complete" protein. Quinoa is the highest protein grain. Seitan from gluten is also high in protein. 60 g: During pregnancy and breastfeeding, we need 60 grams (gm) of protein a day. This is 15-20 gm more than usual. This "extra" is the equivalent of one egg, 1/4 cup of cheese, or one glass of milk. It is also important to maintain a well balanced diet and to stay on your prenatal vitamins.

Use a nonsoy formula: 10% or more of babies allergic to milk formula are allergic to soy. If you are using soy formula for the above reason you may need to try a more elemental formula such as nutramigen or alimentum which do not have the major allergen in other milk based formulas.
