Yes - with care!: Nitrous oxide is a general anesthetic that may be used in the rare case of cesarean section requiring general anesthesia, regardless of maternal asthma history (unless in acute crisis during the delivery). This is an issue for anesthesiologists to address - however keep in mind that the drug crosses over to the fetal circulation at 80% of the maternal serum levels and can cause neonatal depression.
