Different terms: CBT is a type of psychotherapy that examines and disputes negative thoughts and seeks to change negative schemas. Another type is psychodynamic psychotherapy-actually the first kind and what all other therapies are based on-which explores the meaning of current symptoms and how to resolve them. The schemas of CBT came from object relations psychoanalytic theory 60 years earlier.

CBT is one type of psychotherapy. To give you an idea, there are over 400 psychotherapy modalities. Sometimes therapists adhere strictly to one modality. Others are "eclectic" in that they incorporate more than one approach. Example Psychodynamic Psychotherapy explores dynamics of relationships and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy addressing underlying automatic thoughts.
