The right approach: There are several causes for persistent hoarseness. May be caused by allergies, smoking, reflux, an upper respiratory infection, polyps or tumors of the vocal chords and vocal cord paralysis, amongst other things. Visiting an ENT doctor is a very wise step. Direct examination of the vocal cords is critical and can be performed in the office. This will provide the diagnosis in many cases.
