Is fibromyalgia autoimmune?

Not likely: Despite many attempts there has been no clear explanation for fibromyalgia which is thought to be a central nervous system condition of lowered pain threshold. There has never been an autoimmune connection.

No: There is no known autoimmune cause of fibromyalgia. Current thinking is that is is a central nervous system disorder.

Autoimmune disease: Fibromyalgia is not an autoimmune disease as there are no fibromyalgia specific antibodies with no elevations of inflammatory markers. In some there are associated autoimmune disorders such as lupus, RA with symptoms of fatigue and pain. Many autoimmune disorders start with symptoms of fatigue and become autoimmune diseases over years and during such intervals can be labeled as fibromyalgia.

Yes & no: ? if fibromyalgia (FM) is autoimmune (AI). AI is not direct cause of FM, but can be associated in that many AI disorders cause painful fatigue-inducing inactivity; imparting increased soft tissue deconditioning & weakness that contributes to causes of FM: childbirth w. pelvic injury, hypermobility, mechanical injuries, obesity, delicate female joints, & prolonged sedentariness of chronic illness.
