What conditions make a child a candidate for intestinal transplant?

Intestinal Loss: A baby can be born with intestines outside the body & if they twist on themselves during the labor or delivery, the intestines loose their blood supply & die. The same twist (a malrotation) can happen in older kids. The healthy parts can be hooked up to form a short bowel, but this may be too short to absorb enough nutrition for survival. A transplant might be considered in such a case.

Poor absorbtion: Short-gut or short bowel is the most common reason for children needing bowel transplants. Commonly this can be a result of nec necrotizing enterocolitis.
