Hypermetabolic: Critically ill patients are typically hypermetabolic meaning they're requiring large amounts of energy to repair and maintain normal physiologic systems. This energy requires food to replenish or else muscle will be lost to provide energy stores. Even with feeding, many people have a net loss of weight and muscle mass with critical illnesses.

Amongst those well enough to eat: diabetics are fed a low cab diet renal failure patients a low protein others a low cholesterol or normal diet patients with swallowing problems will have a custom diet designed for them to swallow. Some patients will get liquid feedings infused into a tube others IV diets.
