A member asked:

What does robertsonian translocation mean?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Rearrangement: A robertsonian translocation occurs when 2 chromosomes break and the longer pieces of both (which contain most of the important genetic material) fuse together. An individual with a robertsonian translocation can be completely normal, but have an increased risk of having a baby with Down syndrome or other chromosome abnormality if the child inherits more than 2 copies of any part of a chromosome.
